Freshness Guide

Care & Storage

Because real food has a real shelf life โ€” here's everything you need to know to keep your dog's meals at peak freshness from delivery to bowl.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Refrigerator

4 Days

Keep sealed in original container. Store at 40ยฐF (4ยฐC) or below. Keep toward the back of the fridge where it's coldest.

โ„๏ธ

Freezer

3 Months

Transfer to a freezer-safe, airtight container or zip bag. Best used within 3 months for optimal nutrition and flavor.

Everything You Need to Know About Keeping It Fresh

๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Refrigerator Storage

Up to 4 Days ยท 40ยฐF / 4ยฐC or below
๐Ÿ“ฆ

Keep in original sealed container

Our containers are designed to maintain freshness. Only open the seal right before feeding. If you use your own container, choose glass or BPA-free plastic with an airtight lid.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Temperature is everything

Your refrigerator should be set at or below 40ยฐF (4ยฐC). Warmer fridges dramatically reduce shelf life. Store food toward the back, not in the door where temperature fluctuates most.

โฐ

The 4-day rule is firm

Refrigerated food should be used within 4 days of opening. We print the batch date on every container. If you're not sure when it was opened, when in doubt โ€” freeze or discard. Never risk it.

๐Ÿ”„

First-in, first-out

When you receive a new delivery, move older containers to the front and newer ones to the back. Use the older food first to avoid waste.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Serving temperature

Most dogs prefer food at room temperature or slightly warm. Remove the portion from the fridge 10โ€“15 minutes before serving, or gently warm it with a small amount of warm water stirred in. Never microwave โ€” it can create hot spots and degrade nutrients.

โ„๏ธ

Freezer Storage

Up to 3 Months ยท 0ยฐF / -18ยฐC or below
๐ŸงŠ

Freeze on delivery day (if not using within 4 days)

If your order is larger than you'll use in 4 days, freeze the extra portions immediately upon delivery โ€” not after they've been sitting in the fridge. Freshly frozen food retains more nutrition than food frozen after sitting.

๐Ÿ“ฆ

Use freezer-safe, airtight containers

Transfer to freezer-safe glass containers or heavy-duty zip-lock freezer bags. Remove as much air as possible before sealing to prevent freezer burn. Label with the freeze date.

๐Ÿ“…

Best within 3 months

Frozen food remains safe to eat indefinitely at 0ยฐF, but quality (texture, taste, and nutrient retention) begins to decline after 3 months. For the best experience, use within this window.

๐Ÿšซ

Never refreeze thawed food

Once food has been fully thawed, do not refreeze it. Partial refreezing significantly increases bacterial risk. Thaw only the amount you'll use in the next 24โ€“48 hours.

๐Ÿ“‹

Label everything

Use a permanent marker or freezer label tape. Note the recipe name, freeze date, and dog's name if you have multiple pets on different recipes. Organization prevents waste.

Thawing Guide

How to Safely Thaw Your Dog's Food

1

The Best Method: Overnight in the Refrigerator

Move the frozen portion from the freezer to the refrigerator the evening before you plan to use it. Allow 12โ€“24 hours for a full 1-lb container to thaw completely. This is the safest method โ€” it keeps the food cold throughout the thawing process and prevents any bacterial growth. Food thawed this way can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours before use.

2

Faster Option: Cold Water Thawing

Place the sealed container in a bowl of cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes. A 1-lb portion typically thaws in 1โ€“2 hours this way. Important: the water must stay cold โ€” do not use warm or hot water, as this raises the food surface temperature into the bacterial danger zone (40ยฐFโ€“140ยฐF). Feed immediately after thawing โ€” do not refrigerate afterward.

3

Emergency Option: Warm Water Warming (Not Thawing)

If you need to serve a portion immediately and it's still partially frozen, place the sealed container in warm (not hot) water for 5โ€“10 minutes to loosen the food. Serve immediately. This method is for warming a partially thawed portion only โ€” not for fully thawing frozen food.

4

What NOT to Do

โŒ Do not thaw at room temperature on the counter โ€” the outside warms quickly while the inside stays frozen, creating perfect conditions for bacterial growth.
โŒ Do not use the microwave โ€” hot spots can burn your dog's mouth and destroy heat-sensitive nutrients.
โŒ Do not refreeze partially thawed food.
โŒ Do not leave thawed food in the bowl for more than 2 hours. Discard anything your dog doesn't eat within that window.

Know Your Food

Signs Your Dog's Food is Fresh vs. Spoiled

โœ…

Signs of Freshness

Natural, savory aroma consistent with cooked meat and vegetables. Firm, moist texture that holds its shape. No visible mold or discoloration beyond the natural colors of the ingredients. Broth, if present, is clear to lightly golden. Your dog is eager and excited to eat.

๐Ÿšซ

Signs to Discard

Sour, sharp, or "off" smell that differs from when first opened. Slimy or excessively wet texture. Visible mold (any color). Significant color changes โ€” graying of proteins, unusual yellowing. Your dog shows disinterest or sniffs and walks away. When in doubt โ€” throw it out. Your dog's health is worth more than one meal.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Storage Questions

Can I mix refrigerated and frozen portions together? +
Yes, but only to serve immediately. You can mix a thawed portion with a refrigerated portion in the bowl, but do not mix them in the storage container โ€” this introduces temperature variability that can affect shelf life. Always use and serve within 2 hours of mixing.
What containers work best for freezing? +
Glass containers with airtight lids are our top recommendation โ€” they don't absorb odors, are easy to clean, and are completely safe for food contact. Heavy-duty silicone freezer bags are an excellent space-saving alternative. Avoid single-use thin plastic bags, which can crack in the freezer and allow freezer burn.
How do I know if the food was stored correctly before delivery? +
All of our orders are delivered in insulated cooler bags with ice packs to maintain a safe temperature throughout transit. Each container has a batch date printed on the lid. If your delivery arrives without ice packs or you're concerned about temperature maintenance, please contact us immediately โ€” we'll replace the order at no charge.
My dog only eats half a portion โ€” can I refrigerate leftovers in the bowl? +
We recommend not storing leftovers directly in the bowl. Transfer any uneaten food into a sealed container and refrigerate within 30 minutes of serving. Food left in the bowl can pick up bacteria from your dog's saliva. Refrigerated bowl leftovers should be used at the very next feeding, not stored for additional days.
Is it okay to warm the food a little? My dog prefers it warm. +
Absolutely. Many dogs prefer food at body temperature (around 100ยฐF/38ยฐC). The best way to warm food is to leave it at room temperature for 10โ€“15 minutes before serving, or stir in a tablespoon of warm water. You can also place the sealed container in a bowl of warm water for 5 minutes. Avoid the microwave โ€” it creates uneven heat distribution and can destroy some heat-sensitive nutrients like B vitamins.
What's the safest way to travel with the food? +
For travel within 2 hours, the food can sit in a cooler bag with an ice pack. For longer trips, we recommend portioning and freezing in advance, then transporting frozen in a quality cooler. A good rule of thumb: if it's comfortable for you temperature-wise in the car, it's too warm for the food.
